- Before surgery, provide patient and attendant with appropriate information on their condition and treatment options so patient can give informed consent; assess patient's readiness for surgery through physical examination, reviewing medical history and laboratory results; and obtain patient's written authorization for operation.
- During surgery, administer anesthesia to control patient's pain and level of consciousness and provide continual medical assessment of vital life functions.
- After surgery, identify evidence of recovery and determine when patient has been stabilized sufficiently to be moved to the ward or sent home.
- Respond promptly to anesthesia-related complications and emergencies before, during and after surgery.
- Plan and budget for anesthetic activities in the hospital.
- Prepare patients for anesthesia and administering it.
- Provide pre- and post-operative care to patient.
- Provide resuscitation services in case of emergency and disaster situations.
- Maintain anesthetic operational equipment and ensuring their functionality.
- Requisition and account for anesthetic materials and sundries.
- Supervise and appraise staff.
- Adhere to professional and organizational codes of conduct and ethics.
- Support research activities.
- Compile and submit reports to relevant authorities.
- Supervise the Theatre Assistant to ensure the operating room is clean and ready for surgery.
- Promote capacity building by providing continuous learning and development opportunities for theatre staff.
- Ensure biomedical equipment is in good working order by using in accordance with user manual and protocols, perform cleaning and minor maintenance, and alert supervisor of malfunctions.
- Supervise all supply chain activities (stock control, station re-stocking, inventories, expired drugs, etc.) and other anesthetic equipment, narcotics and sedatives follow-up (register, consumptions, empty vials, etc.), and ensure sufficient supply for to perform medical activities, accountable for the appropriate use of materials and assets
- Implement hygiene best practices and ensure the integrity of anesthetic materials including decontamination, sterilization and storage conditions to ensure the safety of patients and staff
- Ensure direct reports have clear objectives, receive mentorship and participate in capacity building opportunities
- Diploma in Clinical Medicine, Nursing or Midwifery
- Diploma in Anaesthesia from a recognized institution
- Registration with Allied Health Professionals Council
- Possession of a valid Annual Practising License
- Minimum 2 years of experience administering anaesthesia is required
- Experience working with an international NGO is an added advantage
- In-depth knowledge of anaesthetic operating principles
- Knowledge of infection prevention and control (IPC) protocol
- Highly skilled in administering anaesthesia and monitoring vital life functions
- Skilled at capacity building and developing a high functioning team
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Keen interest to mentor others
- Physically fit to assist in moving patients
- Committed to high ethical standards
- Ability to live and work in a remote area
